Series Overview: God-Man | Advent 2024

What is this series?

Jesus is fully God.

Jesus is fully man.

This is the mystery we embrace in the Advent season.

Jesus’ God-ness has been debated and wrestled and written into church history, creeds, and catechisms for our benefit.

Jesus’ Man-ness has also been debated and wrestled and written into church history, creeds, and catechisms for our benefit.

However, our current culture has tried to confuse this reality of what it means to be a man. What is a man? What does it meant to be masculine? In a culture that has rejected truth, this world is left without answers to this core question. One journalist said, “The ‘masculinity’ conversation feels stuck, rarely moving beyond banal observations or reflexive dismissals.”

In this series, we answer this question. Rather than starting with the debates, goofy caricatures, or the confusion that leads our day, we start with the Bible and with the God-man, Jesus Christ.

We will ask four questions that get answered by Jesus who is truly, fully, and perfectly man.

Why this series now?

This series has been sitting in my bones for a while now. Here are a few reasons why this series is necessary.

To Teach – The church is called to be the pillar of truth. The church doesn’t have to answer every question in the world, but it does have to answer a lot, and this is one – what is a man?

To Correct – Whether you are looking at Homer Simpson (the ultimate aloof dad) or sitting in counseling healing wounds from an abusive or absent father, the question, ‘what is a man?’ is still crying out for an answer. Jesus is our example we must return to.

To Train – God has graciously given our church lots of boys to raise. God has brought lots of young, teachable men to our church. This question is core to their identity. If we don’t train our boys and young men in answering this question well, they will get answers elsewhere.

To Model – God has also given us a lot of single people in our church—single men and women. We want to model for them the bullseye for this question. We want our singles to be confidently focused on what the Bible focuses on.

To Stir – Hebrews tells us to stir one another up to love and good deeds. This is my deep desire - that our church would be stirred up. And I want our men stirred on to greater things so that our church, homes, neighborhoods, and city would be blessed.
